Bus Safety Rules & Responsibilities

  • The Following Rules apply to students that are boarding, riding and exiting a school bus.

    Bus Safety Rules

    • Students will board and exit the bus in an orderly manner at the designated Bus Stop nearest his or her home.
    • Arrive at the Bus Stop (5) minutes before the scheduled stop time, and wait a safe distance (3 giant steps) away from the curb.
    • Do not approach the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the air brake has been set. Students will then go to their assigned seats and sit in a safe position.
    • Books, band instruments, feet and other objects are to be kept out of the aisle at all times. If an object is too large to fit in the students' lap while on the bus, then it is too big to be transported on the bus.
    •  Kindergarten students must have a responsible adult or older sibling receive them at the bus stop at the end of the school day.

    Bus Conduct Rules

    • Observe the same conduct that you do in your classroom, INCLUDING CELL PHONE USAGE.
    • Speak in a normal tone of voice, or an "inside voice".
    • Remain seated and facing forward in your assigned seat until it is time to exit the bus.
    • Keep all hands, feet, and other objects to oneself; avoid tampering with the bus equipment.
    • Use of acceptable language – obscene, profane, unacceptable language and/or gestures is prohibited at all times on the bus.
    • Do not eat or drink on the bus.
    • No objects are to be thrown inside the bus or from the windows of the bus.
    • Follow ALL the rules outlined in the District’s Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct, as well as any rules established by the driver.

    The following rules will apply to student conduct on KISD Transportation, whether during an extra-curricular activity or regular route. 

    Guidelines for Disciplinary Action

    • The driver or other district employees will attempt to correct the misbehavior of the passengers.
    • If the district employees are unable to resolve the problem, the parents of the student will be notified.
    • If the problem is still unresolved, the principal will be notified as soon as possible.
    • The principal or designee will investigate the incident and notify the driver of the action taken.
    • If the misconduct is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, the principal will send written notice of the violation to the student’s parents within 24 hours, in accordance with the law.
    • If determined necessary by the principal, a conference involving the principal, the student, the driver and the parents will be held. 
    • The principal may suspend the student’s riding privileges or other listed behavior modifiers in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

    Disciplinary sanctions and changes in transportation for a student with a disability will be made in accordance with provisions in the student’s Individual Education Plan.
