Closings & Emergency Notifications

  • Delaying or canceling school is a complicated decision that affects students, staff and families. The primary criteria Katy ISD considers when making a decision include:

    • The safety and well-being of students and staff.
    • Severity of the weather (extreme cold, flooding, etc.)
    • Timing of weather (overnight, weekend, etc.)
    • The ability for buses and cars to travel safely

In the event of inclement weather, Katy ISD continually monitors the forecast from the National Weather Service, and the superintendent meets with numerous administrators in order to make the best decision for students, staff and families. Staff members work throughout the evening and early morning each severe weather day to ensure that buses will run at or near schedule and that students will be safe.

In the event that school is delayed or canceled due to severe weather, or other conditions, Katy ISD makes every attempt to notify families as soon as possible. Typically, by 5:00 am on the day of the weather event, all conditions across the District will have been reviewed and notifications to parents and staff will begin, if needed.

    We notify families via:

    • Katy ISD website
    • E-mail and/or phone call
    • Mass media, including TV and radio
    • Social media (Facebook and Twitter)
    • Katy OnTheGo mobile app

Parents can help by making sure their contact information, as well as emergency contact information, is regularly updated with their child's school.

Katy ISD Inclement Weather Notification - Monitoring

Dear Katy ISD Parents/Guardians and Staff,

Heavy rainfall is projected for the Katy area beginning today, January 22.  Inclement weather that may include thunderstorms is forecasted through Wednesday. The district will continue to monitor weather forecasts, as well as communicate weather precautions to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and visitors.

Katy ISD is operating on a regular schedule today, Monday, January 22.

As always, during inclement weather conditions, our families and staff are encouraged to be extra cautious when on the roads.  At some schools, car rider lines may be a bit longer than usual as we navigate weather conditions. Additionally, transportation may be delayed as a result of heavy rainfall.  As of now, all before- and after-school activities are on schedule. Coaches and sponsors will communicate directly with their students concerning any schedule changes.

Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller counties also have a number of tools on their websites, including information on weather watches and warnings. Katy ISD updates pertaining to district operations will be posted on the following platforms, as information becomes available:
