• Sue Creech taught language arts and reading at Katy Junior High for 28 years and worked until her death on Oct. 15, 1995. During her career, she constantly broadened her knowledge, improved her skills and shared what she had learned with her peers. She had an excellent rapport with her students and earned their respect with her fair, consistent and friendly attitude.

Sue Thompson was born to a family of educators. Her father was a school superintendent, her mother was a teacher, and her grandfather was president of a college. After graduating from Stephen F. Austin University in 1944 with a bachelor's degree in commerce, Spanish and a high school certificate, she went to work in the accounting department of Humble Oil. One day, a handsome young soldier in uniform came into the office to fill out paperwork for his new job. Soon, Sid Creech and Sue were dating, and later, married. The couple had three children, and Sue stayed home to raise them.

As the children grew up, Sue became a substitute teacher, and in 1967 was hired to teach 6th grade at Katy Junior High. Her long-time principal, Roosevelt Alexander, said that every principal's dream is to have teachers who do not add to their workload but instead reduce it. "Mrs. Creech answered that dream for me. Her enthusiasm, innovative ideas and genuine concern for education were exemplary. The flexibility Mrs. Creech demonstrated in working with students, teachers and the public earned her an enviable reputation as an excellent teacher who truly cared about education and people. Her caring attitude and knowledge of her subject made her highly effective with students at all levels of ability. She was particularly diligent with students who were slow or displayed major difficulties in learning."

Her children include Katy Junior High teacher Susan Stormer, teacher and coach Sid Creech Jr. and Elizabeth Cunningham. "In my 35 years as a teacher and administrator, I have never known a finer language arts teacher than Mrs. Creech," Alexander said. In her honor, Katy ISD's 19th elementary school was named Sue Creech Elementary. The school opened on Aug. 9, 2000.
